FOUNDATIONS OF HOSPITALITY

Shift Toolkit

A practical reference for noticing needs, communicating clearly, completing handoffs, and recovering guest trust.

THE CORE STANDARD

Notice. Acknowledge. Own. Follow through.

01 · Notice

Read the person, timing, body language, environment, and stated need.

02 · Acknowledge

Show the guest they have your attention and reduce uncertainty.

03 · Own

Take the next helpful action or make a complete handoff.

04 · Follow through

Return, verify completion, and close the communication loop.

GUEST JOURNEY CHECK

Three moments to protect

Arrival
Have they been seen, oriented, and told what happens next?
Experience
What has changed? What useful need can be anticipated or clarified?
Farewell
Is anything unresolved? Have we closed with genuine appreciation?
COMPLETE HANDOFF

Context → Need → Owner → Timing → Confirmation

“Table ____ is/has ____. They need ____. Please ____. I told them ____. I will confirm by ____.”

  • Share relevant guest context.
  • Name the exact next action.
  • Confirm who owns it and by when.
  • Verify the guest received the outcome.
RECOVERY LANGUAGE

Acknowledge without overpromising

“I’m sorry this ____. I’m going to ____. I will update you within ____. If I need additional authority, I’ll involve ____ and stay with the follow-up.”

  • Listen before explaining.
  • Name the impact, not only the error.
  • Act within your authority.
  • Escalate authority without abandoning ownership.
ACCURATE & INCLUSIVE

Ask. Verify. Adapt. Respect.

  • Ask what would be useful instead of assuming.
  • Use an approved source for allergens, ingredients, policies, and timing.
  • Speak directly to the guest and protect their autonomy.
  • Adapt pace, position, wording, or format when helpful.
  • Never trade dignity or safety for speed.
SEVEN-SHIFT PRACTICE PLAN

Practice one observable behavior.

Use the behavior for seven shifts and record what happened.
